Rinder keynote session

Legal Aid is in Crisis – We Must Act
Robert Rinder - Barrister, Writer, Broadcaster

Criminal barrister and TV host Robert Rinder joined us to discuss what we, the legal community, can do about legal aid's current state of crisis.

Law is meaningless unless everybody in our community has access to it. Since LAPSO in 2012, legal aid services are on the brink of collapse due to successive cuts and the impact of Covid-19.

A growing number of defendants have no lawyer or access to any legal advice when facing criminal charges, which drives more hearings and can end up costing more. Of course, unrepresented defendants often don’t understand some legal concepts, such as the difference an early guilty plea makes in sentencing.

There are also severe problems are among criminal specialists. Is there a future for young lawyers going into the profession as legal aid-funded criminal solicitors?
